Colon Hydrotherapy

Colonics are arguably one of the most powerful and effective means of cleansing and detoxifying your digestive system - the most vital system in the body. Colon hydrotherapy is a safe and gentle infusion of water into the colon via the rectum. No chemicals or drugs are involved and the entire therapy is relaxing and effective. Colonics, colon hydrotherapy, colon irrigation, and high colonic all refer to the same process.

During a 45 minute session approximately 15 to 25 gallons of water is used to gently flush the colon. Through appropriate use of massage, pressure points, etc., the colon hydro-therapist is able to work loose and help the colon eliminate far more toxic waste than any other short-term technique.

Many of us have a considerable amount of impacted (hardened) feces in our colon. Substantial work must be done to remove it. One colonic will remove some of the stagnant waste. The second and subsequent colonics will remove more. To do a complete detoxification program 10 to 12 sessions will be required. Those with a history of drug (Rx or recreational) or alcohol use, poor diets, high stress, or chronic constipation are examples of those people that would require 10 to 12 sessions as well as those individuals that have never done a cleanse.

Once a series of colonics is completed as advised by the hydro-therapist, the colon will begin to function like Mother Nature intended. Many people report a feeling of being lighter, cleaner and healthier with a heightened sense of well-being after completing a cleansing program.  Cleansing and building programs offer preventative measures so that you can be in control of your own health. Dietary changes may be necessary to ensure long lasting and vital health.  For more information please see our FAQ section below.

Did You Know? You digestive tract is approximately 6 times longer than your height and that it is a hollow tube? The digestive system is actually an external system that is inside the body. As such it comes into contact with the external world and all its toxins. The apple you hold in your hand, for example, also touches the digestive tract in the apples natural state. Until something has passed through the lining of the digestive tract it is not considered as being "in the body".

Testimonial "My girlfriend was having serious cramps from constipation and they took her in and gave her a colonic. She was 100% better after that. I really loved this place. I really think they may have saved her life. They were professional and very informed. I was impressed." Alan of San Diego

Did You Know? The colon is host to literally billions of bacteria and can actually hold from 3 to 50 pounds of bacteria. This bacteria accounts for up to 50 percent of our fecal matter. The problem is in which kind of bacteria our colon is holding. By far the larger percent of the American population has mostly the unwanted forms of bacteria. As a result digestion is compromised and health along with it. A good cleansing and re-colonizing with good bacteria can make a tremendous difference in ones overall health.

Testimonial "I have been going to the Alternative Health Center for over 8 years.  I have watched Berney and his team grow and expand.  I wouldn't go anywhere else for colonics or any other therapy for that matter.  They seem to have everything I ever need.  I love this place." S.A. San Diego

Did You Know? Our bodies or the bacteria in them produce some of the vitamin forms we need to live. Vitamin B-12 for instance is manufactured in the colon when the proper bacteria are present. When they are not we end up lacking energy. The vitamin C vitamin is manufactured in all but about three species of mammals, humans being one of them. We must get our C from outside sources and without a clean digestive tract absorption of vitamins and minerals can be diminished, causing us poor health.

Testimonial "I have had colonics all over the U.S. as my job requires me to travel a lot.  I can honestly say that no one does them better than the ones I receive at Alternative Health Center.  Though I have worked with pretty much everyone there I especially love working with Nickie.  She can be quite funny at times and that makes a colonic much easier to handle.  I refer all my friends there."B.R. FAQ

What is a colon?

The colon, or large intestine, is the end portion of the human digestive tract. The colon is approximately 5 feet long and 2 1/2 inches in diameter.

How can I tell if I have toxic material in my colon?

Common signs include: headaches, backaches, constipation, excess flatulence, fatigue, bad breath, body odor, irritability, confusion, skin problems, diarrhea, sciatic pain, abdominal bloat and discomfort, protruding lower abdomen, varicose or spider veins, chronic urinary tract infections, hemorrhoids, yeast or fungal infections, stiff joints, mood swings, skin problems, anxiety, insomnia, low libido, depression, fatigue, diarrhea, nausea, excessive mucus, excessive stress, cloudy urine, or unexplainable weight gain.

Is intestinal toxicity a common condition?

Yes it is. In today's world of fast and processed foods coupled with high stress levels intestinal toxicity has become quite the norm.  The use of colonics can effectively eliminate large quantities of toxic waste thereby positively affecting the condition of the entire body.

Will colonics help chronic constipation?

There are three factors involved in having a well functioning colon: diet, exercise and attitude. Colonic hydrotherapy is excellent for cleansing and healing the colon so that diet, exercise, and attitude can facilitate change and end constipation.

What can I expect after a session?

As soon as the colonic is finished you can carry on with daily routine. The colonic may trigger several subsequent bowel movements for the next few hours, but there won't be any uncontrollable urgency or discomfort. You may feel light-headed or chilled for a few moments following a colonic.

Who administers a colonic?

Colonics are administered by a colon hydro-therapist. Most state regulations require a minimum of 100 hours of training. When choosing a hydro-therapist, look for a certification in colonics, and sometimes other areas such as massage, nutrition, and other holistic practices. Find a therapist you are comfortable with as you will be sharing a somewhat intimate therapy and your comfort and safety are the most important consideration.

Why not use enemas, suppositories or laxatives instead?

Enemas and suppositories are useful for emptying the rectum (the lowest 8 to 12 inches of the colon). Chemical and herbal laxatives are potentially addictive. For a full cleanse colonic hydrotherapy is the best option, clearing the entire colon.

What are the characteristics of a healthy, well functioning colon?

One characteristic is a bowel movement shortly after a meal. The elimination should be easy and take no more than a few seconds. The stool will be long, large in diameter, light brown in color, without offensive odor and should float or sink very slowly. When the toilet is flushed the stool immediately begins breaking apart.

Is a colonic painful?

It rarely is. Usually painful experiences are the result of resistance and tension. A professional colon therapist is skilled at putting you at your ease and minimizing discomfort. Sometimes during a colonic, the colon muscles will contract suddenly, expelling considerable amounts of liquid and waste into the rectum. This may feel like cramping or gas, creating a feeling of urgency to empty the rectum. Such episodes, if they do occur, are brief and easily tolerated.

Are colonics dangerous in any way?

Being an essentially natural process, there is virtually no danger with a colonic. Cleaning and sterilization of the necessary equipment and linen is done as normal procedure.

Will a colonic make me constipated or give me diarrhea?

A slight delay in bowel movements and then a resumption of a somewhat larger, easier to move stool is common. Sometimes there may be no bowel movement for several days. This is not due to the colonic, but the weakness of the colon and is an indication that the colon requires strengthening and healing. Rarely diarrhea or loose bowels due to the extra water introduced into the colon or to the stirring up of toxic waste may be experienced. This usually stops quickly. Severe diarrhea dehydrates the body, and must be carefully monitored.

Will a colonic wash out intestinal flora and valuable nutrients?

Yes. A colonic will wash out all flora in your colon. This is extremely important to understand. Most people have very few good bacteria in their colon and a very large amount of the unhealthy bacteria, like E-coli. Once a cleanse has been completed it is important to take healthy doses of probiotics so that you can re-colonize the good and necessary bacteria in your colon. Healthy bacteria can only breed in a clean environment which has been washed free of toxins and harmful bacteria. When you clean out the toxins and make a better environment for the good flora, they start to multiply and in doing so keep out the unhealthy bacteria which will find no room to grow in.

Since the colon isn't the only organ of elimination, what makes the colonic so important?

While the lungs, skin, kidneys and liver also serve to eliminate toxins, many of the toxins they eliminate are the result of insufficient elimination of the colon. For example, skin eruptions can be a result of a poorly functioning colon.

What effect does colonic hydrotherapy have on our immune systems?

Recent European studies speculate that 80% of immune tissue resides in the intestines. Therefore it is logical that this type of therapy could influence immune deficiency diseases. Colon hydrotherapy is not a cure-all, but an important adjunctive therapy in the overall health of the client.

PROLAPSED COLON

A prolapsed colon is a condition in which the transverse, or middle section of the colon, has dropped below its natural position inside the abdominal wall. In its most severe stage the colon has lost all of its tone and drops completely into the pelvic bowl sitting on top of the bladder and reproductive organs. This condition can cause headaches, colds, the flu, low energy, lack of libido, infertility, chronic urinary tract infections, vaginal yeast infections, varicose veins, spider veins, and a host of other problems. Constipation, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Diverticulitis, Leaky Gut Syndrome, Colitis, Chron’s Disease, and Colon Cancer are all symptoms of a prolapsed, weak, and degenerated colon. Colon Cancer has become the number one cancer among men and women combined.

Normally the digestive process takes 12 to 18 hours if everything is working properly. However, due to poor dietary choices, stress, lack of exercise, and nutrient deficiencies, we find that food stays in the colon much longer than intended. Food that is low in fiber, like meat, starch, and processed food actually take up to 3 times as long to pass through the colon and becomes much more toxic as they putrefy. This delay causes the colon to secrete extra mucus. All of this adds weight in the colon, worsening the prolapsed condition.

The colon’s tone is dependent upon calcium and L-Glutamine as well as other nutrients. Deficiencies in these nutrients cause our colon to weaken. As it loses its tone it begins to droop. Lack of tone decreases peristaltic action making waste move slowly and fewer and smaller bowel movements. This added weight increases the drooping of the colon. The pressure of the prolapsed colon on the veins that bring blood back from the lower extremities limits blood flow and blood begins to pool up causing varicose veins. The lymphatic fluid and other waste from the lower body stop flowing as well . A resulting protruding lower abdomen, or gut, is possible. If you work out and still have a protruding lower abdomen it is very possible that you have a prolapsed colon.

Most if not all of the things mentioned so far can be prevented by a simple colon cleansing program administered by a knowledgeable therapist.
